In 2022, Watt Footprint, were engaged by the Ilac Shopping centre to undertake a full review of all energy operations on site with a view to put Ilac on route to become the first carbon neutral shopping centre in Ireland.
Watt Footprint successfully implemented ISO 50001:2018 the in International Energy Management Standard allowing for detailed analysis of the significant energy users on site to be identified. From this Watt Footprint secured funding from SEAI through the EXEED (Excellence in Energy Efficiency Design) to undertake a deep dive study on all energy using equipment to identify the most viable energy upgrades both from a technical and financial approach to meet the clients' expectations.
From this a number of measures were deemed viable including:
Full replacement of existing AHU served via fossil fuel fired boilers with LPHW with a new DX fired unit
Removal of Fossil Fuel for DHW replaced with an air source heat pump
Solar PV system
Full sub-metering system
Full upgrade of existing BMS to meet EN15232 Standard
High Efficiency Air Curtains
Watt Footprint acted as the main contractors for the delivery of the upgrade works securing 30% capital funding for the project through the CEG (Community Energy Grant) scheme. All works were completed within a 6 month timeframe allowing the client to receive the full financial and energy saving benefits of the upgrades with reduced payback periods.
With the retrofit works now complete, the Ilac Shopping Centre is well on its way to becoming the first carbon-neutral shopping centre in Ireland across all three scopes under the GHG Protocol. The successful collaboration between Watt Footprint and the Ilac Shopping Centre demonstrates the potential for significant energy efficiency improvements in commercial buildings. Watt Footprint has paved the way for sustainable operations and continual energy improvement at the Ilac Shopping Centre.
